Data sources

Every country starts from real public figures. Here’s where they come from.

Presidential starts every country from real public figures, then simulates everything that happens to it. These are the datasets the starting world is built from, with the credit each licence asks for.

1. Countries

Country names, flags, ISO codes, regions, capitals, currencies, coordinates, areas and land borders come from mledoze/countries (github.com/mledoze/countries).

This game contains information from mledoze/countries, which is made available under the Open Database License (ODbL) v1.0. We adapted it: Presidential keeps the 193 UN member states, and the fields the game needs.

2. Economy

Dataset What we use Licence
World Bank, World Development Indicators GDP and growth, population, inflation, unemployment, trade, reserves, government revenue, spending and debt, and infrastructure indicators (electricity access, internet use, logistics) CC BY 4.0. Source: The World Bank.
International Monetary Fund, DataMapper (World Economic Outlook and Fiscal Monitor) Government debt, revenue and spending, inflation, growth and unemployment, alongside the World Bank series Source: International Monetary Fund. Used under the IMF's terms for data reuse.

The figures are the latest year available when the world was built (2025 for most countries, earlier where that is the latest). Commodity trade, interest rates and credit ratings are the game's own estimates, made from public information. Some values are imputed or capped so the game stays playable. They are a starting point for a game, not statistics to rely on.

3. Map

The world map is drawn from Natural Earth boundaries (naturalearthdata.com, via the world-atlas package), which are in the public domain. Made with Natural Earth. Map lines are simplified for small screens and don't take a position on any disputed border.

4. Fonts

Outfit and DM Sans, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.

5. Everything else

Leaders, ministers, events, headlines, treaties and markets in the game are fictional and simulated. No real politician appears in Presidential, and it has no affiliation with any government or with the organisations above.
