What we keep in your browser, and the one switch that’s yours: analytics.
This page lists what presidential.app keeps in your browser, and why. It covers the website and the web game. The Presidential apps for iPhone and Android don't use cookies, and PostHog analytics aren't in them: they keep your device identifier and session token in your device's secure storage. For everything else about your data, see the Privacy Policy.
The short version:
- The game keeps a few things in your browser so you stay signed in. They are always on, and they are never used for analytics or ads.
- Analytics and session replays (PostHog) set cookies only if you choose Accept on the banner.
- Before you choose, or if you decline, we count visits anonymously, without cookies and without storing anything in your browser.
- No advertising cookies, no social media trackers, and nothing that follows you to other websites.
1. What the game needs (always on)
| Item | What it's for | Where it's kept, and for how long |
|---|---|---|
| Guest device ID | A random ID that signs you in as a guest, without a password. | Local storage (president.deviceId), until you sign out, clear the site's data or delete your account. |
| Session | Your session token, your account details (ID, handle, your AI replies choice and, if you signed in, your email address) and how you signed in, so you stay signed in. | Local storage (president.token, president.user, president.authMethod), until you sign out, clear the site's data or delete your account. |
| Firebase sign-in | Your sign-in with Google, Apple or an email link, only if you sign in. Kept by Firebase Authentication's code on presidential.app. | Your browser's IndexedDB, and session storage during a sign-in, until you sign out or clear the site's data. |
| Sign-in link | The address you asked a sign-in link for, so the link can finish signing you in on this browser. | Local storage (president.emailForSignIn), until the sign-in finishes. |
| Preferences | Light or dark mode, and how you like the world map and the live page. | Local storage (president.theme, presidential.worldMapMode, president.live.lens), until you change them or clear the site's data. |
| Seen summaries | Which summaries you've already seen, so the game doesn't show them twice. | Local storage (president.summarySeen, presidential.todaySeenAt), until you clear the site's data. |
| Handoff draft | An unsent handoff note, so a reload doesn't lose it. | Local storage (presidential.handoffDraft.…), until you hand over, empty the note or clear the site's data. |
| Live page cache | A copy of the public world feed, so the live page opens quickly. Public game data only. | Local storage (president.live.snapshot.v2), replaced on each visit. |
| Minister chats | Your conversations with ministers in this tab. | Session storage (president.ministerChat), until you close the tab. |
2. Your analytics answer
| Item | What it's for | Where it's kept, and for how long |
|---|---|---|
| Analytics answer | Whether you chose Accept or Decline on the analytics banner, so we don't ask again. | Local storage (presidential.analytics_consent), until you change your answer or clear the site's data. |
3. Analytics (only if you choose Accept)
| Item | What it's for | Where it's kept, and for how long |
|---|---|---|
| PostHog ID | PostHog's random analytics ID, the current session and, while you play, the account ID it is linked to. | First-party cookies on presidential.app (ph_…_posthog, and ph_…_posthog_cpm, which notes what the first one holds) and local storage (ph_…_posthog, and ph_…_posthog__flags for PostHog's own settings). The cookies expire after a year without a visit. |
| PostHog tab | Tells PostHog which tab a session replay belongs to. | Session storage (ph_…_window_id and a few other ph_… entries), until you close the tab. |
| First visit to the desk | Notes that this account has already opened Today's desk in this browser, so the first visit is counted once. | Local storage (presidential.firstDesk.…), until you clear the site's data. |
If you decline, or change your answer to Decline later, PostHog's cookies and storage are removed and it switches to anonymous, cookieless counting. The Privacy Policy explains what analytics and session replays record, and what they never record.
4. Other websites
presidential.app loads no advertising or social media code, and its fonts are served from presidential.app itself. When you sign in with Google or Apple, their sign-in page opens on their own website and uses their own cookies, under their own policies.
5. Your choices
- Analytics and session replays: choose Accept or Decline on the banner. Change your mind at any time with Privacy choices at the bottom of every page of the website, or in the game in Settings → Privacy → Analytics & replays.
- Privacy signals: if your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, we treat it as a decline and don't ask.
- Your browser: you can clear or block what presidential.app stores in your browser's settings. Clearing the site's data signs you out on that browser, and a guest account that was never signed in can't be recovered afterwards. It doesn't delete your account: see Delete your account.
